Account Deletion

You can delete your Split Circle account at any time. This page explains how to do it from inside the app, how to request deletion by email if you do not have the app installed, what data is removed immediately, and what data we keep (and why). We process every deletion request within 30 days, free of charge.

At a glance

Option 1: Delete from inside the app

The fastest way. No login or verification email needed because you are already signed in.

  1. Open the Split Circle app on your phone.
  2. Tap Account (bottom navigation, or the profile icon in the top right).
  3. Scroll to Privacy & Data.
  4. Tap Delete account.
  5. Confirm. You will see a final review screen listing what will be removed and what will be anonymized. Tap Delete permanently.

The deletion request is queued immediately. You will be signed out and the app will be reset on your device. Anonymization and final data removal on our servers complete within 30 days. We send a confirmation email when the process is finished.

Option 2: Request deletion by email (no app required)

If you have uninstalled the app, lost access to your phone number, or cannot sign in for any reason, you can request deletion by email. You do not need to reinstall the app.

  1. Send an email to [email protected] with the subject line Account Deletion Request.
  2. In the body, include the phone number or email address linked to your Split Circle account. Use the same email you originally signed up with, if possible, so we can verify the request quickly.
  3. We will reply within 2 business days with a verification step (a one-time code sent to your registered phone or email).
  4. Once verified, the deletion is queued. You receive a final confirmation email when the process is complete, within 30 days of your initial request.

If you cannot access either your registered phone number or email, contact us anyway. We can still verify your identity through other information (circle membership, recent expenses) on a best-effort basis.

What we delete immediately

  • Your profile (name, photo, email, phone number, country, currency preference)
  • Authentication credentials (OTP records, Google/Apple OAuth tokens, refresh tokens)
  • Push notification tokens (FCM / Apple Push)
  • App preferences, settings, and theme choice
  • AI Chat history and any natural-language queries you made
  • Custom categories you created
  • Recurring expense templates you created
  • Budgets you set up that are not shared with other members
  • Expenses, settlements, and receipts in solo circles (circles where you are the only member)
  • Direct 1:1 circles where both parties have requested deletion
  • Locally cached data on every device where you were signed in (cleared the next time the app starts after deletion is processed)

What we anonymize and keep (and why)

Some records belong partially to other people. If you and three friends shared a Goa trip and you delete your account, your friends still need their own accurate record of who paid for what. We do not delete those records outright. Instead, we anonymize your involvement:

  • Your name is replaced with “Deleted user” everywhere it appears in shared circles, expenses, settlements, and comments.
  • Your user ID is removed and replaced with an internal anonymous placeholder so the data cannot be linked back to you.
  • Your phone number and email are scrubbed from any related records.
  • Expense amounts, dates, and notes are retained so the ledger remains accurate for other members. The expense itself is no longer attributable to you.
  • Receipt photos you uploaded to shared expenses are deleted. The expense record remains; the image is removed.
  • Comments you wrote on shared expenses have your name anonymized; the comment text is retained so other members keep the discussion context.

What we retain for legal compliance

A small set of records is kept for limited periods to meet specific legal and operational requirements.

What about your Pro subscription?

Split Circle Pro is billed through the Apple App Store or Google Play. Deleting your Split Circle account does not automatically cancel your subscription with Apple or Google. To stop being charged:

  • iOS / Apple: Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → Split Circle → Cancel Subscription.
  • Android / Google Play: Google Play Store app → tap your profile icon → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → Split Circle → Cancel.

Refund requests for subscription charges are handled by Apple and Google under their store policies, not by us. We do not process payments or store credit card numbers.

Timeline

  • Day 0 (request received): You are signed out across all devices. The deletion is queued. Your local app data is wiped on next launch.
  • Day 0 to 2 (email path only): We verify your identity with a one-time code.
  • Day 0 to 7: Anonymization runs across all shared circles and our primary database.
  • Day 8 to 30: Database backups containing your data age out of the 30-day rolling retention window.
  • By day 30: Confirmation email sent. All personal data is removed or anonymized. Only the records listed in the retention table above remain.

What other members of your circles will see

Other members of any shared circle will see your past contributions listed under “Deleted user.” They will not receive a notification of your deletion. Outstanding balances involving your account are preserved as records but you can no longer be paid back or charged through Split Circle. We recommend settling all open balances with friends before deleting your account.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, you have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal data. Specifically:

  • India (Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023): Right to access, correct, erase, and grievance redressal. Our Grievance Officer responds within 15 days.
  • European Economic Area and UK (GDPR / UK GDPR): Right of access (Article 15), right to rectification (Article 16), right to erasure (Article 17), right to data portability (Article 20).
  • California (CCPA / CPRA): Right to know, right to delete, right to opt out of sale. We do not sell your data.
  • Other jurisdictions: Comparable rights wherever local law applies. Contact us and we will help.

Can I recover my account after deletion?

Account deletion is permanent. Once processed, the data is unrecoverable. If you create a new account with the same phone number or email later, it starts fresh, with no link to your prior account or circles. Friends who previously had you in their circles will not see the new account automatically; they would need to invite you again.
