How to use the calculator

  1. 1

    Enter your total wedding budget

Pick a currency (INR, USD, EUR, and more) and enter the total you plan to spend across the entire wedding.

  2. 2

  4. 4

Pick how to split the total

Equal between payers, custom ratio between two families, or weighted shares for more complex splits (bride, groom, and each parent set as separate shares).

  5. 5

Share the link or track it in Split Circle

Copy the calculator URL to share with family. For ongoing tracking as deposits and vendor payments come in, download Split Circle free.

Wedding budget benchmarks

Indian Wedding

Catering and venue dominate at ~45% combined. Attire is unusually high (~15%) because both sides invest in multiple outfits across sangeet, mehendi, and the main ceremony. Photo/video budget grew after 2020; now typical at 8-12%.

Western Wedding

Venue is the largest single line (~30%), often bundled with catering (~25%). Photo and video sits at 10-15%. Reception music and entertainment 6-10%. Stationery and favors are smaller than most couples expect (~4%).

Destination Wedding

Guest travel and accommodation (~20%) is a category most couples underestimate. If you are hosting travel for family, budget for it separately. Multi-day events at the destination shift the catering line up as well.

Intimate / Court

Under 30 guests. Catering is the biggest line (~30%) because per-guest quality goes up when the count is small. Skip large venue rentals and lean into restaurant or private-room bookings.

Wedding budget FAQs

How much should I budget for a wedding in India?

It depends on scale and city. A mid-range Indian wedding in a tier-1 city typically runs ₹15-40 lakh; larger weddings can go significantly higher. Use the Indian Wedding template to see how the total breaks down across venue (~20%), catering (~25%), attire (~15%), photo (~10%), decor (~10%), and other categories.

What are the biggest wedding expense categories?

Venue and catering typically dominate at 45-55% of the total combined. Attire, photo and video, and decor make up another 30-35%. Entertainment, transport, and stationery are the smaller line items. The exact ratio depends on the style: Indian weddings weight catering higher, destination weddings weight travel higher.

How do we split wedding expenses between two families?

The three most common patterns: 50/50 (traditional Western), 60/40 or 70/30 when one family hosts more (common in Indian weddings), or by-shares where the bride, groom, and each parent set count as one share each. This calculator supports all three. Pick 'Two families' with a custom ratio, or 'By shares' for the more granular split.

Is the wedding budget calculator really free?

Yes. This calculator is 100% free. No signup, no ads, no email required. Copy the shareable link to send to family. If you want to track actual spending as deposits and payments come in, Split Circle (the free AI Expense Manager we built) does that.

Can I use this for destination weddings with multiple currencies?

Yes. Pick your primary currency for planning. Once you start actually tracking real payments across currencies (INR to the caterer, EUR to the venue, USD for photography), open a wedding circle in Split Circle. It handles multi-currency automatically and converts everything to your circle's default.

What about wedding budget alerts as we spend?

This calculator is planning-only. For alerts when you approach 80% or 100% of the budget in a specific category or overall, open a wedding-purpose circle in Split Circle. Push notifications trigger the moment the circle spending hits either threshold.

Can I share the calculator result with family members?

Yes. Once you enter a total budget, the URL updates automatically to encode your inputs. Copy the link and send it. Anyone opening it sees the same calculation. No account needed on their end.
